1. Measure Your Space Carefully

Measure the width, depth, and height of the opening including clearance for door swing and ventilation. Counter-depth models sit flush with cabinets but hold less than standard-depth units.

2. Consider Your Household Size

A good rule of thumb is 4-6 cubic feet per adult in the household. A family of four should look for 16-24 cu. ft. of capacity depending on shopping and cooking habits.

3. Think About Door Configuration

French doors offer wide shelves and easy access, side-by-sides give equal fridge and freezer access, and bottom-freezers put fresh food at eye level. Column units offer the most customization for luxury kitchens.

4. Check the Energy Star Rating
